Below I’ve written a parody of the lyrics to the Christmas carol “Carol of the Bells.” I’ve tried to follow the same cadence, as Peter Wilhousky’s original song, to the best of my ability. The format of the original carol is the reason why the lyrics repeat once. I want to advise the reader to try singing these verses rather than reading them. Perhaps using an instrumental version of Wilhousky’s song to follow along? Or, maybe listening to “Carol of the Bells” with lyrics a few times to get the hang of it, and then diving right in.

I first heard this song as a child while watching the classic film “Home Alone,” and I found it as beautiful then as I do now. That interpretation is sung by a children’s choir and is available on most streaming platforms. My lyrics are inspired by what beauty was found in 2020, and also what this year meant to me.

I wish you all a peaceful, and bounteous 2021, which hopefully will make this past year pale in comparison. In the best possible way.

Oh Lord this year, what a strange year

How long it’s been, since we could say

Everything’s going, to be okay

A new year is here, carrying with it

sorrow for those, not here to see it

While shedding our tears, we’ve faced our fears

Awaiting to embrace, a brand new day

Blessings that came, were the cries of new babes

Who despite the madness, chase away our sadness

By piercing each heart, with the divinest of light

They show us quite clear, love is always near

Peals of laughter, chase their tiny patter

Sprinkling blessed hearths, with joy as pure as this earth

Joyful, thankful, grateful, hopeful

For this new year to be fruitful

Joyful, thankful, grateful, hopeful

For this new year to be fruitful

This yearly prayer, for resolve stronger than ever

Leaves no place for regrets, or pesky thoughtlessness

Only improvements and change, have space on this stage

Ensuring no one may, ever again have to say

Oh Lord this year, what a strange year

How long it’s been, since we could say

Everything’s going, to be okay

A new year is here, carrying with it

sorrow for those, not here to see it

While shedding our tears, we’ve faced our fears

For this new year to be fruitful

This yearly prayer, for resolve stronger than ever

Leaves no place for regrets, or pesky thoughtlessness

Only improvements and change, have space on this stage

Ensuring no one may, ever again have to say…
