To me, “keep pushing” means: keep it going, no matter what. Even when those steps are baby steps, make sure to make them. Even when you don’t know what the final product is going to look like, keep going. Even when you don’t know which direction to take, educate yourself. Just whatever you do, keep going.
As I write this, I am highly aware that many of us are having difficulty with exactly this right now since our communal energy has been brought to a near standstill. COVID-19 has changed how our daily routines look, and with that, the steps that we take every day look different. Irrespective of what our current “new normal” looks like, life is still in play, which means not to drop the ball on things that are important to you. If your mental health needs to be your priority, “keep pushing” could simply mean attending to that right now. If you’re an artist, keep creating and doing your thing. Whoever you are and whatever your inclinations in this life, make sure to continue to maintain what is important to you as much as possible.
I believe that “keep pushing” as an expression and mentality can be very useful, especially during chaotic times. When things are heavier than usual in life, I find the expression encouraging because to quote 2pac, “for every dark night, there’s a brighter day.” On the other side of darkness is light, and on the other side of struggle is a thriving you! When you “keep pushing” you allow yourself every day to move closer and closer to the best version of you that could possibly exist.
Keeping it going can look very different from person to person, but although it may vary, one thing is consistent: forward motion. This can be especially hard for those of us who are severely traumatized, but this is also crucial. Focus on an end goal of where you want to be and enjoy the journey of seeing where it goes as you become that person.
Commit to yourself that you are going to show up for you, every day, in small or big ways. That is self-love. That is self-care. Only you have the power and privilege of guiding that process appropriately.
It’s okay not to know how to go about it, sometimes just thinking about it is a good way to start. Try brainstorming. Set concrete and attainable goals while making a plan. Then put it into motion.
Keep pushing when times are tough and when times are good. Keep pushing when life is uncertain and when it is very structured. Keep pushing when things are not going your way and when your goals are being accomplished. Keep pushing every day and empower yourself with every step you take.
You got this.
